Nikro Duct Sealing & Repair: The New York Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Nikro duct sealing and repair parts for most Nikro negative-air machines and HEPA filtration units, with typical installed repair work in New York running between $180 and $420 depending on the failed component. Most jobs are completed the same day we arrive, and the part goes in with a written price agreed before we start. The way New York owners usually find us: the machine powers on, but air pressure at the vents has dropped noticeably, or the unit starts throwing dust back into the room instead of pulling it out. Sometimes it’s a cracked gasket, sometimes a worn-out lid seal that never gets checked until the machine loses its pull. Either way, the machine is only as good as the seal holding vacuum.

We’re an independent service provider in New York. We’re not affiliated with Nikro or its distributors, but we run Nikro equipment on our own trucks every week, and we repair these machines the way we’d repair our own.
Which Nikro Models This Applies To
Most of the repair calls we take in New York involve the Nikro IRIS or HPV negative-air series, along with a steady stream of AVS vacuum units and older HVE setups that are still running strong in apartment buildings. The key to matching the right part is the serial plate: it sits on the back or bottom of the housing and lists the model, voltage, and CFM rating. Write that down before you call anyone, because a Nikro IRIS 750 and an IRIS 1500 take different filter frames and lid gaskets, and crossing them never works out.
For most sealing work – door gaskets, lid seals, filter-tray foam – a quality aftermarket equivalent holds up every bit as well as the OEM piece and costs about 30-40% less. Dale Whitmore has been doing this long enough to know which aftermarket gaskets fail early and which ones outlast the machine itself. For the pressure-switch and motor-capacitor side, though, our experience says stick with OEM Nikro parts. The tolerances on the switch calibration are unforgiving, and a close-enough aftermarket switch tends to cycle the machine poorly and shorten motor life.
Compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Nikro changed the gasket groove profile on the IRIS line around 2018. If your machine is newer than that, the old-style foam rope gasket won’t seat properly, and the machine will pull air around the filter instead of through it. The fix is the flat adhesive-backed gasket made for the newer channel. It’s a five-minute mistake we’ve seen cost New York building managers hundreds in wasted filter replacements when the machine was never actually sealing.

Signs Your Nikro Duct Sealing & Repair Is Failing
Here’s what we hear about most often when someone in New York calls us about a Nikro machine that’s gone weak:
- Low suction at the farthest register. The machine turns on and sounds normal, but the pull at the end of the hose has dropped. Cause: a lid gasket that’s compressed flat or cracked at the corners, letting the machine pull room air instead of duct air.
- Dust blowing back into the living space. You can see a fine haze near the machine’s exhaust or smell that musty duct odor in the room. Cause: a torn filter-bag seal or a misseated HEPA frame. The air is bypassing the filter entirely.
- The machine runs hot or shuts itself off mid-job. Motor overload protection trips because the blower is working harder to pull through a partially clogged pre-filter. Cause: failed filter-tray gasket compounding normal loading, or a manometer line that’s cracked and reading false pressure.
- Lid sits uneven, or you have to clamp it down hard. The old gasket has taken a set and the lid won’t seat without force. Cause: gasket compression loss, simple wear, usually after 2-3 years of regular service work.
- A whistling or wheezing sound while running. Air is finding a gap somewhere it shouldn’t. Cause: shrinking door seal or cracked hose grommet. Left alone, it gets louder and your negative pressure stops being negative enough to do the job.
If you’re in New York and your machine is doing any of this, the problem is almost always a $20 to $90 seal, not a $400 motor. Replacing the motor first is the expensive way to find that out.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For Nikro duct sealing and repair work in New York, here’s the honest range you’re looking at:

- Door or lid gasket replacement: $180 – $280 installed
- Filter tray or HEPA frame seal repair: $200 – $320 installed
- Hose grommets, manometer line, or minor housing sealing: $150 – $260 installed
- Pressure switch replacement (OEM): $280 – $420 installed
- Complete seal-kit overhaul for a Nikro IRIS or HPV unit: $320 – $450 installed
What pushes a New York job toward the higher end: hard-to-reach machine in a mechanical closet, a housing that needs cleaning before the new seal will adhere properly, or an older model that needs multiple seals at once. Every quote includes the part, labor, and a written price before we turn a single screw. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies here like every other visit: if the seal fails within the guarantee period, we return and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing on the work order, not an after-the-fact promise.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here. If you want to check things yourself before calling anyone, shut the machine off and unplug it first. Then run your hand flat along the gasket line and look for flat spots, cracks, or a seal that’s rounded instead of squared. That’s a diagnosis you can do in three minutes without opening the housing. A door gasket on a Nikro isn’t under spring tension, so swapping that one yourself is genuinely doable if you take a picture of how the old one sits and clean the channel with rubbing alcohol before pressing in the new one.
Where DIY goes wrong in New York: anything on the wiring side. A Nikro pressure switch is in line with line voltage, the capacitor carries a stored charge even when unplugged, and an incorrect motor wiring repair is a real fire risk inside a machine that spends its life pulling flammable lint and dust. That’s where we tell owners bluntly: call someone who does this weekly. If your machine is just weak on suction but still running, the fix is probably a gasket we can install in under an hour. Call (585) 517-2324 and we’ll tell you over the phone what you’re likely looking at.
We carry the common Nikro seals and switches on the truck, so when we get to a New York job, there’s no week-long wait for a part to ship. If it’s an oddball component, we tell you that before we take the job, and we tell you what it costs before we order it. No surprises.
We Tell You Straight
One thing we hear from New York building superintendents and homeowners alike: a repair guy shows up, looks at the machine, mutters, and leaves without explaining anything. That’s not how we work. Our practice is simple and we’ve kept it this way since 2004 under the Kingswell Guarantee: we tell you what we found, what we did, and what it cost. In writing, before we leave.
FAQs
In normal residential use, a Nikro door or lid gasket lasts 2 to 4 years in New York before compression takes it flat. In high-rise buildings where a unit runs continuously during renovation season, we see them go in 18 months. The humidity in a New York summer speeds it up, and so does a gasket that was never cleaned before a new filter was seated. If you run the machine weekly, plan on replacing seals every two years as maintenance, not emergency.
In almost every case, a failed gasket gets replaced, not repaired. Foam and rubber seals don’t recover their shape once they’ve taken a set, and any filler or adhesive patch just creates a new weak point. The exception is a door latch that’s out of adjustment, which we can often bring back into spec without replacing anything.
Most gasket and seal replacements we perform in New York are done within 60 to 90 minutes from arrival. A full seal-kit overhaul on a larger IRIS unit takes about two hours. If the housing needs deep cleaning before new seals will stick, that can add half an hour. We tell you the window when you book, and we keep it.
We carry the most common Nikro seals, gaskets, and pressure switches on our service vehicles, so the majority of New York repair calls are fixed on the spot. For less common parts, we order them in and give you the price before we place the order. We also stock compatible seals for Lennox, Trane, and Carrier air-handler work for our cleaning contracts, but the Nikro line is what we carry deepest for sealing repairs.
